Dear OLBS Families,
It’s time for the traditional summer reading contests and assignments….or is it?
It has been an unprecedented and intense year. We have spent every day, face to face, learning and thinking and praying and sharing. We didn’t even have a snow day! So what does this have to do with summer reading?
Summer reading is important. In fact, it’s a crucial part of preventing summer learning loss. It should also be a time for children (and adults) to read what they love, when they want to, for as long as they want to. Requiring students to read from a list or level does not allow for this. Asking them to fill something out every time they read for 20 minutes also takes away from the idea of reading for pure enjoyment.
With all of this in mind, we are going to try something new this summer. This year there are no mandatory book reports, no contests, and no logs. This year the assignment is …..read….just read. Read what you want, when you want, for as long as you want. Read in a tent, on the beach, in the car, on the porch, with Grandma, with Dad, with the dog, with a flashlight….you get the idea.
Hopefully, they will come back in September, rested and inspired and excited to tell us all about the great books they read, the new genres they discovered and the fun that they had reading!
